Design It Yourself Group Lead – Personal Health and Wellbeing
Salary Rate: £10.33 per hour
Hours: 4 hours per week (3 hours session delivery Monday 1pm – 4pm and 1 additional hour planning time)
Location: Space 2, The Old Fire Station, Gipton Approach, LS9 6NL
Holidays: 6 sessions pro rata (Inclusive of statutory and bank holidays)
Responsible to: Personal Health and Wellbeing Project Manager
About People In Action (Yorkshire)
People in Action (Yorkshire) is a thriving Leeds based charity, established in 1983 to benefit people with learning disabilities, difficulties and similar conditions. The charity makes a real difference to the lives of the most vulnerable and socially isolated; inspiring and empowering people to recognise their potential, fulfil their aspirations and lead safer healthier, better connected lives.
The charity provides a range of innovative, inclusive, person centred services which reflect the needs of the people it supports. The activities are wide ranging and include the provision of opportunities for leisure, learning, employment, health, wellbeing and the development of life skills. The range of activities runs from practical courses in employability to social groups that meet in the community to enjoy leisure time together. Through individual care packages the charity also provides practical one to one support tailored to the needs to the individual.
Purpose of the Post
To be part of a team that provides health, wellbeing and personal development groups/courses for adults with learning disabilities, Aspergers and Autism at weekly sessions. To develop and deliver a rolling “Design It Yourself” art and craft programme, whilst supporting members to achieve their person-centered outcomes alongside families, carers and People in Action Staff.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
To support the group members to achieve their own outcomes established at initial referral.
To facilitate and carry out support in accordance with each members risk assessment (if applicable).
To adopt an enabling approach with the emphasis on what group members can do instead of what they can’t do.
To provide a person centred model of support which encourages independence and discourages dependence.
To ensure activities are inclusive for all members.
Art & Craft programs:
To plan and deliver a Design It Yourself Arts & Crafts activity program in consultation with the group members/staff/volunteers and other relevant stakeholders.
To develop activities in a way that supports independence following the program and work in an innovative way when developing this.
To complete weekly attendance records and other relevant information and submit to the PHWB Project manager in a timely manner.
To complete quarterly monitoring reports detailing the planned activities and member outcomes achieved.
To be flexible within the role where there is a business need. This may require you to deliver sessions outside regular hours on rare occasions.
To lead and assist in the collection of feedback from all stakeholders using creative and person centered approaches.
To support the promotion and marketing of the Personal Health and Wellbeing Development Service and People in Action.
To listen and act on any compliments and complaints from all stakeholders and take responsibility for informing the line manager.
Personal Support and development:
To attend training and meetings as and when required. These may be outside of your session times.
To receive supervision once every 12 weeks and liaise with the line manager as required.
To support with collecting evaluations with members/parents/carers or professionals and report to the line manager if required.
To ensure the social, emotional, communication and physical needs of each group member is met in a manner that is sensitive to the religious, cultural, linguistic and ethnic origins of the individual.
To support and empower group members to engage in activities of their choice.
To use skills to communicate effectively with all group members, minimising and managing any adjustments required for members.
To promote the work of the service and the charity.
To adhere to and implement service policies, procedures and protocols within the employee handbook.
To observe the requirements of member’s confidentiality and Data Protection legislation.
To ensure that the service is provided in accordance with People in Action’s standards and objectives, safe guarding, risk assessments, Health and Safety requirements and the General Social Care Council’s Code of Conduct.
Any other reasonable duties as required
We are looking for a creative and approachable individual to join our Design It Yourself team. You will be responsible for leading and developing weekly Art & Crafts sessions as part of the Personal Health and Well-being programme. It will be important for the candidate to be committed to delivering outcome-based activities with a strong person-centred approach. It would be advantageous, but not essential, if the successful candidate had an Art Therapy background.
The below are all ESSENTIAL criteria for the role;
Experience of working with groups
Experience of working with adults with learning disabilities, autism and Aspergers, including learning difficulties, disabilities and complex needs
Experience of developing and delivering outcome focused activities.
Experience of working within community settings and working with parents and carers from diverse backgrounds
A commitment to diversity and discrimination.
An understanding of safeguarding
A basic understanding of health and safety and risk assessments.
Experience of delivering arts & craft activities relevant for adults with learning disabilities, autism and Aspergers.
Ability to plan evaluation activities and engage group members, parents and carers in these activities.
Ability to communicate professionally with members/parents/carers, colleagues
A constructive, flexible approach to team work
