Job Description/Duties

Job Title: Personal Assistant

Hours Per Week: 4

Hourly rate: £9.43 per hour

Location: At home in Morley and in the local community

Purpose of the job:

J requires support to access local community for social and leisure tasks, as well as, to develop his independence. J loves visiting the local park and playing on the climbing frame and would love a Personal Assistant to support in doing this. The family are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic PA to support J out-and-about, whilst providing the family with some respite.

J is a 7 year old boy who uses a disability pram/wheelchair, who would benefit from having a PA who has shared interests, particularly in animals and sensory play. J communicates non-verbally so a PA with experience in non-verbal communication would be ideal. J has a range of non-verbal ways to communicate his emotions and the PA would work closely with the family to understand these.

J loves to explore and can sometimes wander off alone; his PA would need to have good observation skills to ensure he is safe at all times when in the community.  Busy places can make J uncomfortable therefore the PA will build a close relationship to understand his feelings and de-escalate tensions, if required.

The PA may occasionally support with eating at home or when out in the community. They will be provided with First Aid training and advice from mum to ensure this is done safely.

Ideally the PA will have previous experience working with children with additional needs, particularly within a school setting. However, any relevant experience will be considered if the skills can be applied to this role.

This is a great opportunity to share meaningful experiences with J, enhance your CV, and develop your skills for your future career.

Shifts:

The family are looking for a PA for 4 hours per week in 1 shift. This shift will be on either a Saturday or Sunday, which will be flexibly arranged with the PA.

Main Duties:

The personal assistant will be required to do the following tasks and may be asked to carry out other tasks of a similar nature.  I will inform them of which tasks need carrying out on a particular day.

  • Support to source and access interests and hobbies, i.e. visiting the local park, going out on public transport, finding sensory facilities.
  • Carry out all personal care needs, including changing clothes and pull-ups if required.
  • Support with homework and non-verbal communication, i.e. using cue cards or Makaton.
  • Using non-verbal communication techniques to converse with J and keep him engaged in activities.

Essential Requirements:

  • An understanding and previous experience with Autism and de-escalation techniques
  • Flexibility towards planned activities
  • Patience and a tolerance to J’s interests and habits.
  • Knowledge of First Aid and food hygiene, particularly aware of risks of choking whilst eating and drinking.
  • Full clean driving licence and vehicle desirable (mileage reimbursed)

Supervision:

My personal assistant will be directed by and accountable to me in all aspects of their work. They will always ask what is required and not make assumptions about any aspect of the assistance I need or how it should be carried out.

The role is subject to a 3 month probationary period during which you will be closely supervised.

Pre-employment Checks:

Prior to starting work you will be subject of an Enhanced DBS and reference checks. You may also be asked to provide evidence of your right to work in the UK.
