Job Description/Duties

Do you have a DBS certificate? Would you like to support young people to reach their full potential? Become a Peer Tutor and earn money through your mobile!

Remember struggling with your homework and revision for exams? Peer Tutor is a mobile application designed for school students to get instant help from their peers when they need it most. As a Peer Tutor, you will answer questions, provide feedback and deliver live 30-minute lessons to students studying for GCSE and A-Level exams, all via your smartphone.

Once downloaded, the Peer Tutor app lets you set when you are available to work. Meaning you can earn money whilst you are at home, in a cafe or studying in the library.

Our app uses a matching algorithm to instantly connect a learner’s question to a tutor who is verified in that topic. If matched, you will receive a notification to your phone, and you will be able to see the question and either claim or reject it. If you claim the question, you can use photos and text to provide a step by step guide on how to tackle the problem or offer 5 points of feedback on how their work could be improved.

Our live lesson feature allows users to book a live conversation with a tutor, to discuss a specific topic using revision guide content. Live lessons last 30 minutes and all lesson content will be provided for you, so you do not need to prepare any resources. Live lessons start within 5 minutes of you accepting a request, giving you time to get set up on a PC or laptop.

You will be paid for the work you complete on the app. Tutors are paid at the following rates:

  • £5 Per live lesson delivered
  • £3 for five points of feedback on a user’s work
  • £1 for a step by step answer to a specific question

You will receive a star rating for the support you provide learners. The higher your rating the more work requests you will receive through the matching algorithm.
Not only that, if you are ‘favourited’ by a user you will automatically be in the first wave of tutors matched with their requests and will have first refusal on this work.

Tutors are paid at the end of each month via PayPal. We will process payment to the email address provide upon registration. Therefore, we advise all tutors use the correct email address linked to your Pay Pal account in order to receive prompt payment.

PLEASE NOTE: As a tutor you will be working on the app on a self-employed basis, meaning you are free to accept and decline work at your own discretion. As a result, we cannot guarantee a minimum amount of earnings per month and tutors are not expected to complete a minimum amount of work as part of the Peer Tutor role. Moreover, all tutors are responsible for registering with HMRC and declaring all income earned on the app. The Peer Tutor team can provide information and support on how to do this.

To work on the app, you must have received a minimum grade B at A- Level or Level 6 and above at GCSE for the subjects you wish to tutor. You will be asked to provide evidence of all qualifications during the registration process, therefore please ensure you have photos of certificates to hand.
In order to deliver live lessons on the Peer Tutor app you must hold a valid DBS certificate. If you do not hold a DBS, you are still able to work on the app and answer questions and provide feedback to users. However, the Peer Tutor team is on hand to support you in applying for a DBS certificate if you wish to be able to work across all three functions.

As a peer to peer solution, you must have first-hand experience of the UK education system at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 to work on the Peer Tutor app. As a result, we are only able to accept applications from international students if you have completed the following qualifications prior to attending university or college:

  • iGCSE
  • International Baccalaureate#
  • International A-Level

To apply, please go to www.peertutor.com and click ‘Become a Peer Tutor’ or go to the app store on your mobile phone, download the app and click ‘Apply to be a Tutor’.

As a part of the application process, all tutors are required to submit a copy of photographic ID (provisional driving license, student ID or passport) and a scanned copy of your most recent qualifications and your DBS certificate (if you hold one). We do not store these, we just use these to verify your identity and that you have the required grades to tutor, after this they are deleted.

You must attend a 60-minute online training session within 4 weeks of applying to work as a peer tutor. Training sessions run throughout the week and details of these will be sent to you via email. Once you have attended a training session your account will be made live and you can begin working on the app immediately across the Q&A and Feedback features.

If you hold a DBS and wish to deliver live lessons, you must take part in a 30 minute one to one Live Lesson test before you can deliver online sessions with users.
You will need access to a computer or laptop with google chrome/Firefox installed, plus a set of headphones with an enabled microphone in order to communicate with the facilitator.
If you do not complete this step within 2 weeks of your account going live, you will be limited to the Q&A and Feedback features until the second stage of the training process is complete.

If you have any questions regarding the role of a Peer Tutor, please contact the Peer Tutor team at info@peertutor.com or call us on 03300573186.
